OSRS Cooking Training Guide From Level 1 To 99
23 Mar 2020, 11:53

Cooking is essential for survival, especially when facing danger. This is why we created this OSRS cooking guide to help all RuneScape beginners who are just starting out on their journey.
Probably none of the activities involving fighting or combat can be imagined without food used to restore one’s vitality and food won't materialize without cooking.
The Complete OSRS Cooking Training Guide
Cooking is also easy to level up which makes the Cooking skill cape to be one of the most common skill capes in RuneScape. So how do you get to level 99 Cooking fast?
Basics To Cooking in Old School RuneScape
There are some things you should know before becoming a true chef. Rule No.1 of the Kitchen Club: to burn less food, instead of fire, cook on a range, you fool.
When leveling Cooking, you will burn food, there are no two ways about it. However, the burning chance is reduced by these factors:
- Cooking level. The higher, the better.
- Cooking range. Besides reducing burn chance, a range allows cooking anything you can dream of on it, while fire does not.
- Cooking gauntlets. These bad boys will save you a lot of time at high levels. Family Crest quest is required for this. The enchantment on your Family Crest gauntlets can be obtained from Caleb in Catherby by giving him steel gauntlets from the quest.
- Cooking Skillcape. An item you can obtain at level 99 Cooking. When it is equipped, you can forget about burning food ever and the infamous chef will not get an excuse to yell at you.
Know that training Cooking is useful not only for feeding the hungry. Some Quests and Diaries also require you to have a certain Cooking level.

How To Level Up Cooking in Old School RuneScape
Right off the bat, we recommend you to do some quests to save your precious time. The quests Cook‘s Assistant and Gertrude‘s Cat are both great to start with – they‘re easy to complete and give that starting experience which you need badly. Why badly?
Because in the beginning, you will be burning a lot of food, so be environmentally friendly rather than wasteful.
Note: Gertrude‘s Cat is a members-only quest.
Level range 1-15/20
There are two ways to start. You can level up to 15 Cooking with Shrimp or to 20 Cooking with Sardines. The second option is better because the higher your Cooking level the lower the chance of burning food. You will need around 80 Raw Shrimp for 15 Cooking or 100 Sardines for 20 Cooking.
Level range 15/20-30
You can start cooking Trout from level 15 Cooking. As stated before, it is always recommended to level up more than the required level as long as it‘s feasible. You will need around 130 Trouts.
Level range 30-50
At this level range, you will be cooking Salmon. You can buy Salmon from the Grand Exchange or you can spam-click loot it in Barbarian Village, because there will be people power leveling Fishing and, therefore, dropping their catch. You will need around 1k Salmons.
Level range 50-61
The big fleshy Tuna is that you want to cook at this level range. If you don’t feel like buying it and can’t or don’t want to go fishing, you can try stealing Tuna from fish stalls, which requires 42 Thieving. You will need around 2k Tunas.
Level range 61-76
Lobster is your choice at this level range. At this point supplies, if you don’t have any of your own, get expensive. Consider buying OSRS gold to save time and focus on getting that Cooking skill cape! You will need around 8.6k Lobsters. You can also start cooking Lobsters at 50 Cooking, which will require around 10k Lobsters.
Level range 76-82
For F2P players Swordfish is as good as it gets and you can level to 99 Cooking with it. This is, however, quite a daunting task since you will need around 90k Swordfish.
The following methods below are only available for P2P.
Level range 82-89
This level range allows you to cook Monkfish. Note that you can be cooking Sharks at this point. Choose the method best suited for your situation. You will need around 16k Monkfish for 89 Cooking.
Level range 89-93
Cooking Sharks is a viable option to get to 99 Cooking. You can also switch to Anglerfish for better rates if it’s a viable option i.e. money/supply is not a problem for you. To get to 93 Cooking, you will need around 11k Sharks.
Level range 93-99
Anglerfish, the strange and horrifying dweller of the deeps now sizzling on the cooking range just to fill your belly later. It looks weird, but it’s perfect for your health. You will need around 25k Anglerfish to get to 99 Cooking.
Keep in mind that catching Anglerfish requires 100% Piscarillius favor which is a pain to get, so there can be a shortage of those on the GE, or they simply can be overpriced. However, if you have your own supply, cooking Anglerfish can be quite profitable.
Alternative Cooking Leveling Methods
Level range 35-99
Making wines is the single best method to level up Cooking. It is fast and it is somewhat AFKable. The downside is that it’s a real money drain. If you’re rich, this is an excellent method for you, yielding around a whopping 500k XP/h.
For a single Jug of Wine, you need 1 unit of Grapes and 1 Jug of Water. Combine Grapes with Jugs of Water and voila! Grapes can be farmed from Hosidius Vinery at 36 Farming and 65% Hosidius favor. There is a 5% chance to make Bad Jug of Wine until you reach 68 Cooking.
Level range 30-99
Cooking Karambwans is the single best method to level up Cooking – you can get up to 950k XP/h!
The downside is that these numbers can’t be reached without some berserk intensity clicking. Check out this handy YouTube guide on how it’s done. This method does not only provide you with great amounts of XP, but you can also sell Cooked Karambwans for a good profit.
Cooking Locations in RuneScape
The best location for leveling Cooking is the Hosidius Kitchen. If you can’t reach Hosidius Kitchen then the second-best option is Rogue’s Den where you will find an ever-burning fire.
As was mentioned before, however, the cooking range is superior to the fire due to lower burn chance which in turn can save you a lot of time. Combine that with Cooking gauntlets and you got yourself the best cooking equipment ever.
Well, until you get that Cooking skill cape, that is.
